Things have changed a lot in the last 30 years of gundog training.
Lots of people are switching to more modern, force-free methods. Finding new ways of teaching the same skills, and working with their gundogs.
But this does not mean that there isn’t a huge amount we can learn from the previous generation.
Trainers who have worked their gundogs, and achieved huge successes with them have something to teach us all.
Gundog Training by Keith Erlandson
With numerous Field Trial Champions under his belt, and a lifetime of experience in the shooting field, Keith Erlandson produced a book in 1976.
Erlandson was a spaniel trainer of great repute.
His book is warm, readable and informative. Covering not just training, but also discussing his experiences with different breeds of dog, and choosing puppies.
As with all books of the period, this has a very traditional flavour. But even if you prefer a more modern approach to your training, there is still a wealth of wisdom to be gleaned from within the pages of this classic gundog book.
A must read for any spaniel enthusiast. Just remember, it is up to you to take from books like this what you need, and to be discriminating about the contents!
